Product Description
This comprehensive guide for new parents finding themselves overwhelmed dealing with the reality of parenting provides "parent-tested, pediatrician-approved" advice to allay their fears. Written in a compassionate yet authoritative tone by two moms who are also pediatricians, this guide covers a wealth of topics that often prove daunting in the first eight weeks of a child's life. Starting with "Into the Mouths of Babes" (the trials of breastfeeding) and "What Comes in Must Come Out" (a discussion of "pee and poop") and moving on through "Fever: Trial by Fire" and "Seeing Yellow: Jaundice," this guide offers sound advice that will enable parents to feel confident about their parenting skills. Hints on daily living, sleep patterns, crying, the art and science of diapering, and traveling with a newborn are also provided.

5 out of 5 stars super all around baby care   October 13, 2008
I love this book. The voice it is written in is both down to earth and funny. It makes you feel like you are talking with the authors themselves. It has many details about baby care often overlooked by other books or resources. The chapter on breastfeeding is particularly truthful and helpful. During the more trying moments of learning to care for my newborn I found this book to be a comfort.

3 out of 5 stars Boring, pretty biased, but, good amount of detail   October 8, 2008

First, I've only read 2 or 3 chapters so far. It starts off with breastfeeding. Aside from its length the first chapter was a put off for me because the author seems biased about breastfeeding and a couple of other points. If a women weren't intending to or for some reason couldn't breastfeed, this chapter and this author may make her feel guilty which is unfortunate and certainly not what a mom with a newborn needs. I am pregnant now and plan to breastfeed because I agree with the benefits, but women during this time should receive support with whatever they choose (bottle or breast). Encouragement to breastfeed is probaly a good thing, but I just didn't like the vibe from this book...at least so far. Maybe I haven't read more yet because of the initial turn off. I rate it with 3 stars because I like a lot of details and this book appears to be fairly clear and practical for the new mom. Overall, you probably wouldn't regret buying the book, but as with me, you may want plan to buy others on newborns for various opinions so you may reach your own conclusions on how to mother your child.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT IF YOU'RE A NEW (AND NERVOUS) MOM   September 30, 2008
As a new mom, I wanted to know as much as I could to prepare for my baby. This book is an excellent source of information, and seems to give you more useful and realistic advice (even about "simple" things that first-time moms may not know) than others I've seen. SO IF YOU BUY ONLY ONE BOOK TO READ BEFORE (AND AFTER) YOUR BABY COMES, GET THIS ONE!

5 out of 5 stars Great book - am keeping this one close to hand   September 19, 2008

Written in a clear, easy to read and entertaining manner by two authors who are both mothers and paediatricians, this book gives straightforward, helpful and unjudgmental advice. Much is common sense and much I've gleaned from reading other books or from my antenatal classes, but of the books I've been given before my son was born this is the one I'm keeping close to hand. It was easy to read quickly from start to finish in the week or so before our baby was due and importantly, is set out in a way that makes it very easy to quickly find the sections I need now that the baby is here, making it an excellent resource and reassuring to have in these early days of adjusting to life with a newborn.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for new parents   September 5, 2008
I would recommed this for new parents. Helpful and useful as well as an easy read.
