Product Description Several people are waiting to greet Captain Vivian Gembara when she returns home after a year-long tour of duty in Iraq--her grateful fiancS and two officers dispatched from headquarters to retrieve "the file." Certainly not the homecoming she expected, but such is life when you are in the business of soldiers behaving badly. As a lawyer for the U.S. Army, Vivian counsels them, investigates them, and when necessary, prosecutes them. When an Iraqi teenagers body is found floating in the Tigris River and U.S. soldiers are believed to have been involved, she knows she has a case on her hands. What she doesn't realize is just how much that case will reveal about the Armys conduct at war. Drowning in the Desert: A JAG's Search for Justice in Iraq is both a legal thriller and a searing account of the savagery that occurs when commanders place "the fight" above all else.

Learned a lot in this good read. January 6, 2009 I learned a lot from this book about the complexities of war, the role of women in the military, the need for more support for our troops (personnel and practical items), and the importance of justice. The book reminded me how smart, dedicated and compassionate these young people are who serve our country. A good read that I would recommend to everyone including young people wanting to go into the military.
drowning in the desert a jags search for justice in iraq January 6, 2009 This is truly a great book, and not just for people who enjoy "war stories". It is very well written, easy to follow and you won't want to put it down once you start. It is an amazing story about a womans ability to do what she believed was right even though doing what was right was probably the most difficult thing to do at the time. It is an absolute must read for anyone who enjoys a good book.
Seeking justice in a war zone December 4, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Part of what made this book so compelling to me was hearing a military/war story from a woman's perspective. It reads almost like a crime thriller but the crimes were committed in the context of a war zone and the endings aren't so tidy as they are in fiction. The author is to be commended not only for her service to our country but also for her commitment to seeking justice even when it meant going up against her own chain of command. For those of us who only stay home and watch from a distance, this book gave a glimpse into what is going on in our names on the other side of the world. Well done.
Ethics at war December 1, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Reading books about war and the military is not something I typically choose to do. However, I'm glad I read this book because I learned a lot and it was easy to read. I thought it was a fascinating account of the day-to-day struggles of a non-combat soldier's service in Iraq. I have greater appreciation for people, especially women, who endure the challenging circumstances found in a war zone. Equally compelling was the story of trying to maintain some justice and morality in a situation that is anything but that.
Outstanding and fascinating November 22, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Like other reviewers, I couldn't put it down. This fascinating book presents an extremely compelling, well-written, and brutally honest account of shocking events that have not received close to enough coverage in the national media. The reader comes away with large-scale anger over the actions of some in the army command, as well as a small-scale appreciation of the daily lives of soldiers in Iraq. It took great courage for the author to write this book, and the result is outstanding.
