5 out of 5 stars Lovin' Me Some Mercury!   December 1, 2008
Mercury Warrant was said to be one of the best Breeds ever to have been created. Until one night while in captivity, Mercury's would be mate died (I said "would be" because the mating was never completed, nor was there any hormone exchange). Rampant with rage for his mate's death, Mercury was overcome by acute Feral Displacement, an anomaly where the animal within overtakes the human. Caught and confined, he underwent severe drug therapy to numb the effects of the Feral Displacement. After which the heart of his Lion became chained within his psyche allowing Mercury to behave civilized. Unfortunately with this chaining, he now lacked all the unique strengths that his beast once offered him along with any chance to experience the mating heat. So far it has been known that Breeds mate only once.

Mercury, the only Breed with facial features closely resembling that of his Lion Breed counterpart, is now the most human in his pride.

Ria Rodriguez is in disguise and on a mission. Find who is hijacking highly classified information from Sanctuary without the resident Breeds ever being the wiser. Dressed in dowdy clothing and a severe bun, Ria comes to call disguised as a clerk for Vanderale Industries and the Leo (1st created Breed), with the cover assignment of discovering Sanctuary's use of Vanderale funds and whether or not funding should continue.

Being the Leo's employee and family friend, Ria is a heightened security risk. The Breed assigned to guard Ria's life is Mercury, and he can't help but fall into lust at first sight. Infused with immediate suspicion, Mercury has the distinct impression that Ria is hiding something and he's thoroughly enamored by the thought of discovering what's behind the clerk facade and if the hellion within wants to come out and play. Ria on the other hand, is in no mood for games. She is aware of Merc's history and is not willing to risk her heart to a man who already lost his years ago.

Ria is and always has been an outsider. A traumatic past has taught her to guard her heart and guard it well. Mercury's incapability to fully mate with her adds to Ria's feelings of inferiority. She wants him badly, but refuses to subject herself to the pain of their inevitable parting. He is unattainable by the laws of nature and really who can compete with that? But what Ria is truly lacking is the will to fight for what she wants but Mercury soon puts her strength and desire to the test and when finally given the chance, Ria proves that she can fight till the death.

Mercury also feels like a man apart. A Breed embodying only the limited capabilities of a human makes for a very awkward conversation. Plus, Mercury has been denied what he most desires, his mate. Although consumed with desire for the dowdy little clerk, Mercury resolves himself to the fact that although he can't mate, doesn't mean he can't love and begins pursuing Ria in earnest.

As evidence of a Sanctuary traitor builds, Ria's inner walls of defense begin to crumble. Mercury's persistence proves to be undeniable and Ria soon finds herself falling head first into love. The feeling is mutual but the lack of mating heat causes pain to bleed upon their relationship. In addition, Mercury is once again exhibiting Feral Displacement and the resident Breed scientist wants to confine Mercury for drug therapy. Finally, Mercury enjoys a blast from his past when his mate comes back from the dead to reclaim what is thought to be hers. All the while, Ria is trying to track a traitor who may be planning to kill.

Leigh delivers with 'Mercury's War', and is now my favorite Breeds series installment thus far. Mercury and Ria were perfect for each other. Both were outsiders striving to fit in, and by finding each other they finally became apart of something. There were plenty of exciting twists and turns in this novel with some excellent surprises that packed an unbelievable punch. My inner submissive thoroughly enjoyed Mercury's overwhelmingly dominant tendencies, especially as Ria unlocks the chains of the beast within, all I can safely say is DAMN IT"S HAWT! Leigh fans rest assured that you'll not be disappointed with 'Mercury's War'. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Mercury's War   November 17, 2008
This was a much anticipated book and it did not fail to please. Since he was first introduced I had been wondering how this author would handle this character that she had created and it lived up to my expectations. It was wonderfully written and thought out plot and I loved reading ever minute of it.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best!!!!!   November 11, 2008

My, my, my, what a book!! I just cannot get enough of Lora and her very sexy, very strong, amazing breeds. It has become an addiction. I finished reading this book when I was waiting for my plane to Chicago and had to find another book to fulfill my breed withdraws. The book store in the airport did not have any Lora Leigh books (I was extremely disappointed) so I decided to give another author a try. I am not one to compare writers since each person has their own writing style but nothing, and do mean nothing, compares to the same body numbing heat and passion that Lora Leigh delivers. I have been left with this void that has yet to be satisfied until my package arrives with a new breed book.
I haven't been reading them in order but no worries as each book is it's own story. There is a couple of more to go and I can't decide which one is the best but, OH MY GOD, Mercury is delicious and the epitome of what a man should be (well in my opinion). I love that he is powerful, without being arrogant, and the fact that he doesn't apologize for it but also allows his mate Ria to be strong as well.
Just to give you a bit of background: Mercury is one of the strongest breeds and the personification of what a breed should be. Along with his strength comes a feral rage that overcomes him when his so-called mate is killed.
For years the feral rage is under control until Ria steps into his life and boy, does it get interesting. Between the spies leaking info on the mating heat, Doctor Ely losing her mind, Ria's big secret, and Mercury's alleged mate coming back into his life it's a wonder she had room for the building love Mercury and Ria discovers. And the passion, my goodness. At one point I had to put the book down, it was just to steamy.
And ladies, if you find a man like Mercury and some chick tries to steal him, just follow in the footsteps of Ria and claim your man. You'll know what I'm talking about once you get to the end.

5 out of 5 stars Another 5 Star Edition to Leigh's Breed Series   November 10, 2008

Mecury's War- the 16th book in Lora Leigh's popular Breed Series, was a total hit for me. I actually got choked up while reading it, and it's been a long time since a romance novel (albeit PARANORMAL!) has moved me that much.

In Mercury's War we get Mercury's story- a lion breed closest to the lion side than many of his breed brothers & sisters. In Leigh's Breed world, the genetically enhanced hybrids mate for life- if a partner dies then the one left behind suffers- they become "feral"- and never will find another perfect match.

When the feline breed who Mercury believed to be his mate dies years ago while they were still in captivity, he went berserk, tearing humans limb from limb. After that, the scientists who created and enslaved the breeds developed a drug to tame the beast inside him and since then he's lived a half existence- with limited enhanced abilities, so unlike his brethren.

Mercury has given up on ever finding a partner in life. But then he meets Ria, that paper pusher of one Dane Vanderale- a son of the great Leo- the first breed. Unbeknownst to both Mercury and Ria, Ria has touched the caged beast inside of Merc and when the beast begins to awaken, people start running scared. Especially Ely, the trusted doctor who knows all the feline's secrets. When Ely discovers Merc's feral side awakening, she demands he be imprisoned- for the safety of the pride.

But things are not what they seem, and Ria finds herself defending the strange breed who both attracts and frightens her. She knows that he will never be truly hers and that if she lets him- he will break her world apart- but another game's afoot at Sanctuary, the feline breed compound, and it will take Ria to suss it out and save not only Merc, but the entire clan.

Like I said earlier, I LOVED this one. Mercury is an awesome alpha hero, both possessive and tender, and Ria is heart-wrenching in her vulnerability. But she is no shrinking wallflower and when what she truly is comes to the front everything else- including Mercury- takes a backseat to her innate strength!

Many of leigh's other series I can't get into, but the breed series just gets better and better, imo. In MW not only do we get a touching love story, we also get to see the other characters we know and love (JONAS!) and a kickbutt suspense plot.

I'm giving this one a 5 out of 5! How could I not?

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Amazing   November 7, 2008
Lora Leigh continues to amaze me! I keep waiting for her writing to weaken as so many of my past favorite authors have. But, she just seems to get better and better. I've anxiously awaited Mercury's story ever since he was first introduced. It was worth every minute of the wait. I've enjoyed all of Lora Leigh's series but The Breeds and Tempting Seals series are just amazing. I highly recommend both sereis and also recommend checking out her e-books still available at Ellora's Cave. You will not be disappointed.
