Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Students of art hailed Classical Drawing Atelier, Juliette Aristides’s first book, as a dynamic return to the atelier educational model. Ateliers, popular in the nineteenth century, teach emerging artists by pairing them with a master artist over a period of years. The educational process begins as students copy masterworks, then gradually progress to painting as their skills develop. The many artists at every level who learned from Classical Drawing Atelier have been clamoring for more of this sophisticated approach to teaching and learning. In Classical Painting Atelier, Aristides, a leader in the atelier movement, takes students step-by-step through the finest works of Old Masters and today’s most respected realist artists to reveal the principles of creating full-color realist still lifes, portraits, and figure paintings. Rich in tradition, yet practical for today’s artists, Classical Painting Atelier is ideal for serious art students seeking a timeless visual education.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent worthy of Examination   December 21, 2008
The language is a bit obstruse, but it is worth the buy.
The typeface is smaller than I am happy with and the tone of the
writing seems unnecessarily over intellectual from time to time. But
inspite of its many shortcomings it is an asset to the serious artist.
It makes reference to sources of information that may require some background or research Which could be intimidating.
Not to worry the sincere and willing to learn can gain much by examining the Images with an open attitude and meditative state of mind. Its Observations tend to be genuine. It will not disappoint. Only the arrogant can be hurt by this book, or its companion work. It does have my Recommendation with a caution. The Reader Will Be Entering into the Land Of The Giants As Well as the realm of largely past Genius' and as such the newbie artist, or art lover maybe at hazard philosophicaly. It's Probably best to remember that each artist must follow their own true path while considering what is relevant to their own efforts.

Ps. I do not challenge the gods here, I offer only MY OPION!

2 out of 5 stars not enough information   December 14, 2008

I read the entire book and did some of the exercises. The exercises are useful but I would have appreciated more photos illustrating the concepts and techniques discussed; close up shots of brushwork, palettes with the color strings, close ups of turning form, all with the paint colors spec'd over the photos so I can see exactly how the paint was used. I wish she had SHOWN rather than merely written about these things. Most artists are visual learners.

I was distracted by the sharp criticism of 'modern' painting that popped up in every chapter. I get it, the author is a firm believer in academic realist style, and apparently is quite irritated with much of what we see in modern painting. Since I am reading the book, I think the author can assume I value academic study. I would prefer her to get on with the instruction with less pique.

I can't afford to go to an academy. I love to paint. I need to understand academic techniques so I won't be so frustrated when I can't get the effect I want. I honestly didn't understand some passages of this book. Some painters will probably sneer at my ignorance and think I am a rank amateur. Fine, sneer away, but isn't the point of this book to help people like me? I wish she would rewrite it with less rants and more illustrations.

5 out of 5 stars Classical Painting Atelier   December 7, 2008
In my opinion this is an outstanding book that far exceeds many of the run of the mill How to art books on the market. It is very well written and covers in detail the classical methods of the Masters. What interested me the most was the detailed descriptions on the design principles of the Masters. Beginners as well as many experts who have not studied at an atelier can learn much by reading the book and doing the various lessons.

This is the most inspiring art book I've purchased in a long time. Full of insights and observations and instruction, not to mention stunning high quality color images on every page. This book has introduced me to artists I hadn't heard of, namely Jacob Collins and especially Walter Murch whose atmospheric oil paintings of common and overlooked objects has encouraged me to paint the more common objects that fascinate me. I'm taking my time working through this delicious book - I also purchased Juliette Aristides equally inspiring book 'Classical Drawing Atelier'. This is a vital addition to the serious artist's desk - don't leave it on the shelf!
