Celebrate over 100 years of Herge with a new hardcover boxed set. Join traveling reporter Tintin and his faithful dog Snowy, along with well-known friends such as Captain Haddock, as they embark on extraordinary adventures spanning historical and political events, fantasy and science-fiction adventures and thrilling mysteries. These full-color graphic novels broke new ground when they were first released and became the inspiration for countless modern-day comic artists.

This fantastic collection, containing 7 hardcover volumes (each containing 3 classic Tintin stories) and an additional bonus volume, Tintin & Co. by famed Tintinologist Michael Farr, is a great gift for Tintin lovers and first-time fans everywhere.

5 out of 5 stars Love it!   January 6, 2009
- the box set is of very good quality
- the illustrations are crisp and the typeface clear, though it is a bit small

4 out of 5 stars BIllions of blistering blue barnacles and thundering typhoons   December 31, 2008

In all my life, nothing interested me in reading more than Tintin did. The intrepid reporter and his sarcastic and loyal dog Snowy's voyages around the world are bound to pique anybody's interest in travel, adventure, local culture, humor and politics. Captain Haddock endears himself to children and adults alike, despite(or with?) his wisecracks, gruff manner, short fuse and choicest expletives. The man has single-handedly wiped off the stigma attached to alcoholism. Mind you, I'm not saying he made it cool. But he made it more tolerable and me, less ignorant of its social significance. Thompson and Thompson' spoonerisms are side-splittingly funny. Herge, i bow to you.

I bought individual copies of the 3-in-1 series before this boxed set was out and i'm ok with the smaller size and print. It's true that they are not easy on the eye(nor are they for those of us wanting to relive our childhood reading the standard edition), but they're handy, great for traveling and don't take too much space on the coffee table. But i'd still recommend the standard edition for children.

5 out of 5 stars I Like Tiny Tintin!   December 28, 2008
Just got this for Christmas! I was a little worried, having read the reviews about the too small type. But I took the plunge and ripped open the cellophane--the text is FINE! Standard, Manga-sized text, slightly smaller than a western comic print size and actually bigger than a lot of Chris Ware's ACME Novelty Library type. And it's printed very clearly and crisply. If you can read a paperback novel, your eyes should have no trouble with this type.

These editions are very easy to read in bed, you can hold them like a novel, the full sized editions aren't as handy for prone reading.

Tintin miniaturizes well, the books are bound very nicely, AND it's a super bargain for a hardcover complete Tintin collection. Get it!

3 out of 5 stars The set is a mixed bag, but ultimately disappointing   December 20, 2008
I was going to write a review about the content of the stories - in addition to the presentation of the box set - once I had finished reading and, in most cases, rereading the books but I wanted to share my thoughts with anyone hoping to pick this up.

First of all, I'm disappointed that 3 Tintin adventure were left out of this collection: Tintin "in the Congo", "Land of the Soviets" and "Alpha Art." Regardless of their criticisms (which have no basis whatsoever) or whether or not the stories were even completed, they should have been included in the set. Even if the quality of these stories aren't on par with his later works I want to see Herge's progression as a writer/artist and THAT alone makes it special. No knock on Michael Farr, but wouldn't you rather have the 3 missing volumes than his book? I think I'll leave it at that, another reviewer has spoken much more eloquently and with more vehemence than I could about this issue.

Missing adventures aside, this set still could have been a success if only the books weren't so DAMN SMALL. Yes, it's true. Everyone who's complained about the panels and words being too tiny to read have a legitimate point - and I thought it was only because they had poor vision. I didn't (want to) believe them, until I ripped open my parcel from Amazon, thinking "the books can't be that tiny if they come in a box this size" only to discover half the box was filled with packaging and the other half contained the books.

This is so very wrong. Whereas DC Comics gives their classic graphic novels the star treatment by releasing them in extra large HC format, Little Brown shrinks theirs to about 2/3 their original size - to the point where the rigging of the model ship in the "Secret of the Unicorn" begins to disappear off the page because the lines are so thin. Other than having to hold the books right up close your face to read them, they are actually pretty nice.

The only redeeming factor that prevents this set from being an outright failure is the price. So buy or not to buy? If you don't have hundreds of dollars to spend on the regular books then go for it - although I recommend you previewing the gift set in hand to make sure you can actually read it first. For everyone else and especially for those reading Tintin for the first time, do yourself a favor and Herge justice by getting the regular sized ones. I myself fall in the former category, hence the 3 stars.

1 out of 5 stars Poor customer service   December 11, 2008

I pre-ordered this gift set in Mid July and waited paitently for it to be released. Then in late Nov I get a notification saying that it is undeliverable (with no explanation for why.) I am extremely disappointed with amazon over this, making me wait 5 months for nothing!
