This book is particularly good for beginners but doesn't dumb it down too much that you'll outgrow the book too quickly. I've always wanted to draw but wasn't interested in re-creating a boring bowl of fruit or a done to death vase of roses!
Chris manages to capture the funny side of characters and accentuates their quirkiness with ease. He also explains things like why the 'Know-It-All' girl's eyes must curve upwards [they make her appear condescending] or why the 'Pizza Delivery' guy has to look elongated, lanky and awkward and what features help him appear this way.
Lots to do in this book so stock up on sketch pads, pencils and erasers!

Purchased this book after loving another cartooning book: Drawing the new adventure cartoons also by C. Hart. The books opens with an extensive character design lab which covers all(?) I need to know about creating characters: drawing the head, noses, eyes, facial expressions, body types, feet, hands, footware and more. I love the humor Hart uses to bring the characters to life and the how he categorized them: big city characters, suburbs, spoiled junior, rich witch and hundreds more. Lots of fun and extremely educational.

The book starts the way all instructional books should. It builds a foundation, explains the tools needed (start with a pencil) goes over basic techniques, and then builds on that. The book gets into more detail, details that only an observant professional and expert like Chris Hart can see, i.e. How to draw people of different ages, rubbery mouths, different character types. I loved the section on character types from the suburbs. He clarified a lot. Funny, hilarious stuff - The Leading Man who collects his own autograph. I'm a big fan and this is my favorite.
