Product Description This fun, honest, reflective and prescriptive guide for the new mother will actually make new motherhood easier. Interviews with hundreds of moms and the author's personal experience, come together as this fun book breaks new ground with its honesty and humor mixed with practical strategies to give new moms a "leg-up" on the very often scary experience of motherhood. Through the conversation style, this book drives home the point that new moms are not alone and that there are some things they can try to make new motherhood a little more controllable and a lot more enjoyable. The index for easy reference and the resources for further exploration creates a valuable book to be read, and then read again as new mother "opportunities" arise.
"It Gets Easier! And Other Lies We Tell New Mothers, gives new moms uncensored advice they won't find anywhere else. Claudine tells it like it really is, with honesty and humor!" - Amy Tiemann, Ph. D., author of the award-winning Mojo Mom

Fun but not friendly to Breastfeeding December 31, 2008 I appreciate that this book is fun, empathetic and helpful for many women. That said, my two main critiques of the book are:
1) Much of the advice is not based on empirical research. Some of the advice is even contrary to empirical research. 2) It is generally not friendly to breastfeeding and attachment parenting approaches. I respect that there are many approaches to parenting, several of which work fine for moms and babies, but I think the book is a bit too judgmental and uninformed on the subject of breastfeeding.
There was one quote in particular such as "Nobody is going to help you breastfeed for the 12th time that day." I agree that women do not have enough guidance and encouragement on breastfeeding and can certainly understand why many quit. However, it doesn't have to be that way! There are many ways to get help with breastfeeding- yes, even for the 12th time that day.
You can enlist help from a Doula, lactation consultant, and yes even your partner or husband. When we were starting from scratch and completely clueless, these kinds of resources were a HUGE help:

Every new mom should read December 12, 2008 Thank you, Claudine, for writing this book! It was refreshing ro hear about some of the more realistic sides of new motherhood. It was helpful to hear that others were having similar feelings. She also provides excellent tips to help you get through! Also, Claudine Wolk was even gracious enough to personally respond to an inquiry I had. I will be purchasing this book for ever new mother I know!
if you are having a baby this book is a MUST READ BEFRORE December 2, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Honestly, I originally bought the book because I liked the title and I liked the author's name! ha,ha. I have a six year old daughter. I was looking for a book that would serve as a reminder as to what was ahead. I only wish I had bought it when I had my first daughter. Unfortunatley I was completely unprepared. With my first pregnancy I read books on labor, delievery and didn't know what to do or what life would be like with a new baby. This book really gave you the honest picture of what it is like to have a new born. What your life will feel like and how it changes in great detail. But best of all, it doesn't leave you hanging. Claudine gives you very practical suggestions of how to cope with your new baby and new life. Other books get very bogged down in details that are not practical and absolutely not helpful. This book is HELPFUL! VERY HELPFUL! IT DOES NOT WASTE YOUR TIME! I am so glad I read it, and now my husband is reading it. I highly recommend this book for anyone having their first or second or third child. I love that she offers a baby schedule, that she even gives you tips on how to keep your house clean and manage your life. Claudine is realistic with our current lives. She even discusses such topics as working mom vs. stay at home mom. Best of all you truly feel like you are talking with a friend and she is telling you the truth about what is to come after you give birth. The secrets, the answers and the experience. I feel a lot more prepared and confident since reading this book. Thanks Claudine!
If parenting does not come easy for you....check this out November 27, 2008 This book is a great book for women transitioning from the workforce into motherhood. If you are a woman who was completely career focused and are expecting your first, you will want to check this book out. Yes, parenting can be challenging. For some women, being a Mom is all we have ever dreamed of. For others, being a mom doesn't come so easy. If you are one of those Moms who are finding this motherhood thing to be a difficult adjustment add this book to your library. You won't feel so alone after reading this :)Mommy's High Heel Shoes
Very bad book October 11, 2008 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
This book presents a collection of what an annoying woman down the street - you know the one who thinks she knows it all - might say. Her main attitude is that motherhood is drudgery and a woman should be as little inconvenient by it as possible. Breastfeeding? No, thank you, it is difficult. Baby eats too often? Enforce a schedule. Baby doesn't let you take a shower? "There is nothing wrong with letting the baby cry while you take a ... shower." Actually, "crying is a good exercise for baby's lungs." I won't say that motherhood is easy, because it is not, but I definitely will not describe it as drudgery. I can not help but wonder if those people who gave good reviews to this book are her family and such.
